The Fire Brigade says the chemical PCB is burning but says no phosgene has been detected in the smoke plume this morning.
None the less, residents were warned by SMS and voice mail on the emergency alert system not to go outside if they live in the surrounding suburbs of Franklin, Crace, Harrison, Watson, Downer, Kaleen, Lyneham and Hackett. This was later expanded to dwellings within a 10km radius of Mitchell.
Evacuations took place in Mitchell, including campers at EPIC, who were evacuated to Dickson College early this morning as a result of the emergency.
At 8am Emergency Services reduced the exclusion zone to 300m, effectively closing the light industrial suburb of Mitchell.
