A vintage World War II-era fighter plane plunged into the edge of the grandstands Friday during a popular air racing show, killing three people, injuring more than 50 spectators and creating a horrific scene strewn with body parts and smoking debris.
The plane, flown by a renowned 74-year-old air racer and Hollywood stunt pilot, spiraled out of control without warning and appeared to disintegrate upon impact. Bloodied bodies were spread across the area as people tended to the victims and ambulances rushed to the scene.
Authorities were investigating the cause, but an official with the event said there were indications that mechanical problems were to blame.
Maureen Higgins of Alabama, who has been coming to the show for 16 years, said the pilot was on his third lap when he lost control.
She was sitting about 30 yards away from the crash and watched in horror as the man in front of her started bleeding after a piece of debris hit him in the head.
"I saw body parts and gore like you wouldn't believe it. I'm talking an arm, a leg," Higgins said "The alive people were missing body parts. I am not kidding you. It was gore. Unbelievable gore."
Among the dead was pilot Jimmy Leeward, 74, of Ocala, Fla., a veteran airman and movie stunt pilot who named his P-51 Mustang fighter plane the "Galloping Ghost," according to Mike Houghton, president and CEO of Reno Air Races. Officials earlier said Leeward was 80.
Renown Regional Medical Center spokeswoman Kathy Carter confirmed that two others died, but did not provide their identities.
Stephanie Kruse, a spokeswoman for the Regional Emergency Medical Service Authority, told The Associated Press that emergency crews took a total of 56 injury victims to three hospitals. She said they also observed a number of people being transported by private vehicle, which they are not including in their count.
Kruse said of the total 56, at the time of transport, 15 were considered in critical condition, 13 were serious condition with potentially life-threatening injuries and 28 were non-serious or non-life threatening.
"This is a very large incident, probably one of the largest this community has seen in decades," Kruse told The Associated Press. "The community is pulling together to try to deal with the scope of it. The hospitals have certainly geared up and staffed up to deal with it."
The P-51 Mustang, a class of plane that can fly at speeds in excess of up to 500 mph, crashed into a box-seat area in front of the grandstand at about 4:30 p.m., race spokesman Mike Draper said. Houghton said Leeward appeared to have "lost control of the aircraft," though details on why that happened weren't immediately known.
Houghton said at a news conference hours after the crash that there appeared to be a "problem with the aircraft that caused it to go out of control." He did not elaborate.
He said the rest of the races have been canceled as the NTSB investigates.
KRNV-TV weatherman Jeff Martinez, who was just outside the air race grounds at the time, said the plane veered to the right and then "it just augered straight into the ground."
"You saw pieces and parts going everywhere," he said. "Everyone is in disbelief."
Tim Linville, 48, of Reno, said the plane appeared to lose partial control off the plane when he veered off course and flew over the bleachers where Linville was sitting with his two daughters.
"I told the girls to run and the pilot pulled the plane straight up, but he couldn't do anything else with it," Linville told the AP. "That's when it nosedived right into the box seats."
Linville said after the plane went straight up, it barrel rolled and inverted downward, crashing into an area where at least 20 people were sitting.
"If he wouldn't have pulled up, he would have taken out the entire bleacher section," and hurt thousands of people, Linville said.
Linville said the plane smashed into the ground and shattered like an enormous water balloon, sending shrapnel and debris into the crowd.
"It was just flying everywhere," he said.
Leeward, the owner of the Leeward Air Ranch Racing Team, was a well-known racing pilot. His website says he has flown more than 120 races and served as a stunt pilot for numerous movies, including "Amelia" and "Cloud Dancer."
In an interview with the Ocala (Fla.) Star-Banner last year, he described how he has flown 250 types of planes and has a particular fondness for the P-51, which came into the war relatively late and was used as a long-range bomber escort over Europe. Among the famous pilots of the hot new fighter was WWII double ace Chuck Yeager.
"They're more fun. More speed, more challenge. Speed, speed and more speed," Leeward said.
Leeward talked about racing strategy in an interview Thursday with LiveAirShow TV while standing in front of his plane.
"Right now I think we've calculated out, we're as fast as anybody in the field, or maybe even a little faster," he said. "But uh, to start with, we didn't really want to show our hand until about Saturday or Sunday. We've been playing poker since last Monday. And uh so, it's ready, we're ready to show a couple more cards, so we'll see on Friday what happens, and on Saturday we'll probably go ahead and play our third ace, and on Sunday we'll do our fourth ace."
Houghton described Leeward as "a good friend. Everybody knows him. It's a tight knit family. He's been here for a long, long time," Houghton said.
He also described Leeward as a "very qualified, very experienced pilot" and that he was in good medical condition. He also suggested Leeward would have made every effort to avoid casualties on the ground if he knew he was going to crash.
"If it was in Jimmy's power, he would have done everything he possibly could," Houghton said.
The National Championship Air Races draws thousands of people to Reno every year in September to watch various military and civilian planes race. They also have attracted scrutiny in the past over safety concerns, including four pilots killed in 2007 and 2008. It was such a concern that local school officials once considered whether they should not allow student field trips at the event.
The competition is like a car race in the sky, with planes flying wingtip-to-wingtip as low as 50 feet off the sagebrush at speeds sometimes surpassing 500 mph. Pilots follow an oval path around pylons, with distances and speeds depending on the class of aircraft.
The FAA and air race organizers spend months preparing for air races as they develop a plan involving pilot qualification, training and testing along with a layout for the course. The FAA inspects pilots' practice runs and brief pilots on the route maneuvers and emergency procedures.
Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., issued a statement saying he was "deeply saddened" about the crash.
"My thoughts are with the families of those who have lost their lives and with those who were wounded in this horrific tragedy," he said. "I am so grateful to our first responders for their swift action and will continue to monitor this situation as it develops."
The biggest boxing event of 2011 is rapidly approaching, but before Floyd Mayweather and Victor Ortiz show off their “STAR POWER” to fans in Las Vegas and around the world, some of boxing’s top seasoned veterans and up-and-coming talents will step into the ring at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. to show off their skills. One could even call it “FUTURE STAR POWER.”
Kicking off the festivities in two bouts that will air just before the “STAR POWER: Mayweather vs. Ortiz” pay-per-view broadcast begins, Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions are proud to present a “Freeview” that will feature a 10-round welterweight bout between veterans Said Ouali and Carson Jones as well as an eight-round super middleweight battle pitting Dion Savage against Adonis Stevenson.
Also in action in intriguing undercard bouts will be British contender Anthony Crolla, Mexican sensation Marco Antonio Periban and Las Vegas debutants Kyrone Butler and Cassius Clay.
The “STAR POWER” “Freeview” broadcast will be available free of charge and shown by several satellite and cable providers, as well as online beginning at 7:00 p.m. ET/4:00 p.m. PT. The broadcast will be available online at www.goldenboypromotions.com, RingTV.com, Yahoo! Sports and Foxsports.com. Cable, satellite and phone customers should contact their local providers for channel information. DirecTV, Dish Network, AT&T U-verse and most cable systems will be showing the “Freeview.”
Las Vegas based “Prince” Said Ouali (28-3, 20 KO’s) has long been one of the most underrated fighters in the sport, but with a strong performance on September 17, he can show the world what he’s made of. Boasting a record of 14-1 since 2004, the 32-year-old Morocco native has done his part to earn a big fight opportunity, and now the light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter and brighter.
Twenty-five-year-old Oklahoma City product Carson Jones (31-8-2, 21 KO’s) shares a similar path to Ouali, as all he keeps doing is winning. Unbeaten in 15 of his last 16 bouts, Jones’ last six wins have come by knockout, and it’s evident that when he and Ouali meet in Las Vegas, there will be plenty of fireworks from these two hungry veterans.
While Ouali and Jones are established veterans, super middleweights Dion Savage and Adonis Stevenson are hungry to get their names out to the boxing public. Flint, Michigan’s Savage (10-1, 6 KO’s) bounced back in style from his lone loss to fellow prospect Marco Antonio Periban in February by shutting out Eddie Tigs over six rounds in August. Nicknamed “Superman,” Longueuil, Canada’s Adonis Stevenson (14-1, 11 KO’s) is a talented southpaw who is coming off of a third-round knockout of 25-1 Derek Edwards in April that netted him an NABA title.
A young man who has emerged in the last year as one of Mexico’s top prospects for future world title consideration is 26-year-old Marco Antonio Periban (14-0, 10 KO’s) who will introduce himself to fans and the media in the fight capital of the world on September 17 when he takes on tough Pennsylvania veteran Dhafir Smith (24-21-7, 4 KO’s) in a super middleweight bout scheduled for eight rounds. 4-0 in 2011 already, Periban took the “0″ from Dion Savage’s perfect record in February and is looking to put on another stellar performance in his most important fight to date.
Former amateur star and current British Boxing Board of Control Lightweight Champion Anthony “Million Dollar” Crolla (21-2, 9 KO’s) has been waiting for an opportunity to fight in Las Vegas and on September 17, he will get his chance when he takes on Mexico City’s Juan Manuel Montiel (6-4-3, 1 KO) in an eight round matchup. The 24-year-old Manchester, England native has won eight in a row over the last two years. Crolla will face a still challenge in Montiel, a rugged battler who is guided by Hall of Fame trainer Nacho Beristain. Crolla vs. Montiel will be available on Primetime in the United Kingdom.
Opening the event will be a super lightweight four round bout pitting Kyrone Butler against Cassius Clay in a meeting of debuting Las Vegans.

Birmingham City lost their opening Europa League group stage match 3-1 to Portuguese team Braga following two stunning efforts and a late goal to secure the points.
Marlon King got a goal back for the Blues at 2-0 down, but it was too little for a team who had dominated for long stages of the match without too much incisive play.
Adam Rooney should have put Birmingham one up with five minutes gone after a good break from Marlon King, but placed his shot into the side netting.
The missed shot was punished by Helder Barbosa, two minutes later, with an outstanding volley into the top corner. Boaz Myhill might have done better with the strike, getting two hands to the ball, but the shot was hit with too much ferocity for the ‘keeper.
For the next 10 minutes there was a barrage on Myhill’s goal, with the ‘keeper making three fine saves to keep his side in it.
After 20 minutes, Rooney flicked a header dangerously over top after good delivery from Wade Elliott's free-kick.
Braga went in at half-time on top, and extended their lead soon after the break. Lima was offside when an initial ball came into the box, but when it rebounded back to him he gave Myhill no chance, crashing the ball in off the underside of the bar.
With 20 minutes to go, substitute Chris Burke picked the ball up 25 yards out, and burnt the left-back for pace before flashing the ball across the face of goal where the waiting Marlon King was on hand to tap home. It was all set for a grandstand finish, but with two minutes remaining Braga broke and Barbosa was on hand to emphatically secure all three points for the Portuguese side
After 75 days of seclusion and surviving every eviction that came their way, either Rachel, Porsche or Adam will win this season’s Big Brother.
BB left us last week with Rachel, Adam and Porsche spinning round in the first part of the three round final and most important HOH competition of the season. Adam is the first to start complaining about the pain and ejects himself from the competition after 28 minutes. Despite how important this part of the competition was, the pain Adam felt took first priority. After 40 minutes of continuous spinning, the girls are feeling a bit nauseous, but it is Porsche that hops off first, handing the victory of round one to Rachel.
In part two of the HOH competition, Adam and Porsche will take on an underwater maze, separately placing the heads of the previous heads of household. The player with the best time will move on to play against Rachel in the final HOH competition. Porsche struggles with her air supply a little bit and that slows down her game. Adam, on the other hand, seems to be struggling with his goggles more than anything. He opts to throw the goggles off. Afterwards, he realizes how bad of a move that is and must get out of the tank to put them back on.
Adam came in with a time of 6 minutes 3 seconds; Porsche completed the maze in 3 minutes 50 seconds and will move on to battle against Rachel.
The jury gathers with Jordan and Kalia as the newest jurors. Each juror discusses how they feel about the final three. Tensions are high and the differences are prevalent. The main argument is between Porsche and Rachel but many are in agreement that Adam didn’t do much in the game. Daniele attempts to give Porsche credit, but nobody will hear it. Kalia and Jeff are at each other’s throats and refuse to agree on anything.
Porsche and Rachel face off in the final HOH competition. The girls must answer questions by finishing the statements made by jury members. Rachel is the first to score a point, after five questions, only one point is scored. Rachel answers correctly and with only one question remaining, Rachel is automatically crowned the final HOH. Rachel throws herself into a fake crying fit, calling this moment “surreal.” She is given the commercial break to decide who she wants to evict.
Rachel stands and votes to evict Adam, keeping Porsche by her side. Now that Adam has joined the jury, the jurors can finally address Rachel and Porsche on why they should choose them as the winner of Big Brother. Lastly, Rachel and Porsche stand to make what Julie calls “a 500,000 dollar speech.” After their speeches, the jurors take their turns to vote who they want to win.
As with every other season of Big Brother, once the voting is completed, the first five evicted houseguests, Keith, Cassi, LaWon, Dominic and even Dick have come back to tell their side of what they’ve seen this summer.
After commercial break, Julie stands before the key box to revel who has won Big Brother. The girls must receive four votes to win.
Votes went as follows: Brendan votes for Rachel to win Daniele votes for Porsche Jeff votes for Rachel Shelly votes for Rachel Kalia votes for Porsche Jordan votes for Rachel Adam votes for Porsche
Rachel is the winner of this season's Big Brother. Remember, America voted for their favorite houseguest to receive $25,000 and America voted for Jeff! Big Brother will return next summer!

A new manager, some new players and the same ambition: to be crowned champions of Europe. But despite the recent arrivals Chelsea seem farther from realising that dream than at any time since Roman Abramovich turned them into a European force. They've been to five of the last six Champions League semi-finals but given their persistent weakness and the strength of some of their rivals, even going that far this year seems beyond them. Andre Villas-Boas worked wonders at Porto; he will have to do likewise at Chelsea.Glenn Hoddle, while talking on Sky about Arsene Wenger, has just said: "this is the least squad he's ever had". And on the subject of Fernando Torres, he says: "he's still a great player ... his movement off the ball is better than anyone else's in the Premier League." So, Fernando Torres = the new Oyvind Leonhardsen?
Best selling author Joe McGinniss’ book titled “The Rogue: Searching for the Real Sarah Palin” has yet to hit the shelves of book stores in America, but the National Enquirer was fortunate enough to get an advanced copy of the book, and among the juicy gossip that they unleashed upon the public was a story about Sarah Palin hooking up with then-Michigan Wolverine star, Glen Rice.
As the story goes, Rice and his Wolverine teammates were in Alaska taking part in the Great Alaskan Shootout around Thanksgiving time in 1987. Palin was covering the event for KTUU, an Anchorage television station, when she laid eyes on Rice and knew she had to have him to herself for one night. According to a friend of the American politician, Palin “hauled (Rice’s) ass down” and engaged in a one-night stand with the former NBA player in the dorm of her younger sister, who was attending the University of Anchorage Alaska at the time.
The book also mentions stories of Palin cheating on her husband and snorting cocaine off the top of a 55-gallon drum while snowmobiling with friends. It is set to hit book shelves next week and needless to say, I can’t wait to read the rest!

After more than 18 months away from competition, Luke Rockhold will finally make his return on Saturday for the biggest fight of his career against Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza.
A product of American Kickboxing Academy, the 26-year-old Rockhold is considered one of the brightest young fighters in the middleweight division after winning seven of his first eight professional fights.
Despite missing a lengthy period of time due to a shoulder injury, Rockhold was seen as one of the most talented 185-pound fighters under the Strikeforce banner.
While it came as a surprise to some that he was given a title shot after the long layoff, Rockhold wasn’t overly shocked by Strikeforce’s decision to give him the opportunity.

I'll leave you with the thoughts of Sportsmail's rugby correspondent Chris Foy: 'England played their get out of jail card early in this World Cup, by fighting back from 9-3 down to win 13-9, assisted by some six missed kicks by Argentina. 'Remarkably, Jonny Wilkinson also had an off night with the boot, with five misses of his own. England were seemingly under pressure and in disarray around the hour mark but Ben Youngs' arrival gave them a lift and the Leicester scrum half scored the only try of the night to turn the tide. 'It looked as though Martin Johnson's side might pull away after that but instead they were clinging on at the end. The manager and his coaches have plenty to ponder this week. Not a positive start - far from it.'
80min: We've passed the full time mark.. Argentina still in possession.
79min: England kick a penalty to the corner, they can't work an opportunity, lose the ball and Argentina pour upfield. Desperate defending from England. Can the Pumas fashion one last chance? 76min: Argentina 9 England 13 (Wilkinson) Ha! The old boy's still got it! Daylight now for England as Wilkinson gets it right from 30 yards out after Argentina collapsed a scrum.
72min: What a difference a try makes. England look reborn in this final quarter following Youngs' score. Armitage chases after an up-and-under, taking a magnificent catch and wins the penalty as the Pumas hang on in the ruck.
