10 people injured in Bluesfest stage collapse ! Stage to fall down during the Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest Sunday July 17, 2011

The main stage at Ottawa's Bluesfest collapsed Sunday night under a severe thunderstorm, injuring several people, one severely.
Ottawa paramedics said one person was rushed to hospital with "life-threatening injuries" and another person was "severely injured."
The patient with life-threatening injuries was taken to hospital with a piercing wound to the abdomen and a fractured leg and pelvis, paramedics said.
It is believed part of the stage broke off, piercing the man's stomach, CTV Ottawa's Graham Richardson reported.
At least three people were taken to hospital. Others were treated for minor injuries.
Earlier, the festival's Twitter account announced there were no "serious injuries."
There are multiple emergency vehicles on site.
Ottawa Fire Services said that a second search under the collapsed stage confirmed that no one was trapped underneath.
Classic rock act Cheap Trick had been performing for about 20 minutes at the time of the collapse.
The band left the stage just prior to the collapse.
"Everyone is okay and we are so lucky to be alive and hope that all the fans are okay too," the band said in a message on Facebook.
Jordan Potechin said he saw the stage topple over, after several flashes of lightning but before the rain started coming down.
"The rain happened after I saw the stage collapse. It was more just wind," he told The Canadian Press.
"And as we were leaving the rain started."
Thousands of concertgoers took shelter in the nearby Canadian War Museum, according to reports.
Environment Canada warned that winds could reach up to 90 kilometres per hour in Ottawa Sunday night.
Fire officials said there were numerous reports of downed wires and trees in the Ottawa area.
Bluesfest cancelled the remaining performances Sunday night, including headliner Death Cab for Cutie.
The festival, which first took place in 1994, has grown into one of North America's major summer music events.

16 pound baby born in Texas [VIDEO]

Texas - A Texas mom expected a big baby, but nothing like this: 16 pounds, 1 ounce.

Janet Johnson on Monday remained in an East Texas hospital after giving birth to what her doctors called one of the biggest newborns they’ve ever seen. She was awaiting word on whether her son, JaMichael Brown, ranked among the biggest births in state history.

“Everybody was amazed that he was so big,” Johnson, 39, said. “I don’t think too many people have heard of having a 16-pound baby.”

JaMichael was born Friday at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview. Johnson has gestational diabetes, which results in bigger newborns for many mothers. Doctors had estimated JaMichael would be around 12 pounds prior to the cesarean birth.

The hospital has asked the state’s vital records department whether JaMichael is big enough to approach any Texas newborn records, said Victoria Ashworth, a hospital spokeswoman. He is certainly the biggest in the history of the Longview hospital and was born, Ashworth said, almost two years to the day after the hospital delivered its smallest baby ever, who weighed just 15 ounces.

Guinness World Records says the heaviest newborn ever recorded weighed 23 pounds, 12 ounces, born to an Ohio woman in 1879.

Ashworth said JaMichael, whose father is 6-foot-7, was likely to be transferred Monday from the neonatal intensive care unit and into the regular nursery. Johnson said she hoped to get her son home later this week -- and return his newborn clothes that won’t fit.

Not to mention, Johnson said, get her son out of the spotlight finally.

“It’s gotten overwhelming,” Johnson said. “But if I had heard of someone having a 16-pound baby, I would probably want to have heard about it, too.”

Phone-hacking scandal: Tuesday's key quotes

Allegations that the former prime minister Gordon Brown was the victim of systematic hacking and "blagging" have upped the stakes in the News International scandal still further. Here are some of Tuesday's key quotes:
Gordon Brown
• "I'm shocked, I'm genuinely shocked, to find that this happened because of their links with criminals, known criminals, who were undertaking this activity, hired by investigators with the Sunday Times. I just can't understand this – if I, with all the protection and all the defences and all the security that a chancellor of the exchequer or a prime minister, am so vulnerable to unscrupulous tactics, to unlawful tactics, methods that have been used in the way we have found, what about the ordinary citizen? What about the person, like the family of Milly Dowler, who are in the most desperate of circumstances, the most difficult occasions in their lives, in huge grief and then they find that they are totally defenceless in this moment of greatest grief from people who are employing these ruthless tactics with links to known criminals." – Gordon Brown reacts to allegations that his family were targeted by News International journalists.

• "In tears. Your son is now going to be broadcast across the media. Sarah and I were incredibly upset about it. We were thinking about his long-term future. We were thinking about our family. But there's nothing that you can do about it. You're in public life. And this story appears. You don't know how it's appeared. I've not questioned how it's appeared. I've not made any allegations about how it's appeared. I've not made any claims about [how it appeared]. But the fact is it did appear. And it did appear in the Sun newspaper." – Brown on how he and his wife reacted to the news that the Sun had obtained his son's medical records.

• "I find it quite incredible that a supposedly reputable organisation made its money, produced its commercial results, at the expense of ordinary people by using known criminals. That is now what has got to be investigated." – Brown on what must happen next.

• "When the record of my time as prime minister is looked at – and all the papers will be there for people to see – they will show that we stood up to News International, that we refused to support their commercial ambitions when we thought they were against the public interest." – Brown on suggestions that his government was too close to News International.

"From the methods I know that are used, and the impact it has on your phone, your pin number, I am 99% certain my phone was hacked during a period of 2005-06. Who by, I don't know. The records don't exist any more." – Metropolitan police assistant commissioner John Yates, who decided not to reopen investigations into hacking in 2009, giving evidence to the Commons home affairs select committee.

"I can assure you all that I have never lied and all the information that I've provided to this committee has been given in good faith," Yates told the MPs. He added that his decision not to pursue hacking allegations in 2009 was a "poor decision", saying: "We didn't have the information we should have done."

• "I think it's terrible what happened to Gordon. I think it's disgusting, and I think it just adds to the long list of outrages that we've seen practised by certain newspapers and I think it reinforces the need for comprehensive action to be taken. There can be nothing good about this crisis but one thing that can come out of it is a determination among politicians, journalists and others to make sure that nothing like this ever happens again." – the Labour leader, Ed Miliband, gives Sky News his reaction to the situation.

• "John Yates is in charge of counter-terrorism. He is doing a very good job in that role. I have confidence in John Yates." – the home secretary, Theresa May.

• "If I'd have ordered a public inquiry at the time, I'd have probably been castigated because in the runup to a general election people would have said it was an attempt to get at Andy Coulson who'd been appointed by Cameron. So you can't take today's knowledge and just apply it retrospectively. You have to look at the information that was available at the time." – the former Labour home secretary Alan Johnson tells Sky News why he did not set up an inquiry into phone hacking.

• "We note the allegations made today concerning the reporting of matters relating to Gordon Brown. So that we can investigate these matters further, we ask that all information concerning these allegations is provided to us." – News International reacts to the Brown allegations.

• "The latest revelations that the details, personal details of a former prime minister, were obtained, the fact that police officers may have been involved in protecting members of the royal family and then selling that information on to journalists – these are all very serious allegations, the most serious allegations, certainly this committee has seen over the last few years." – Keith Vaz, chair of the Commons home affairs committee.

Argentina Vs Costa Rica 3-0 - All Goals & Match Highlights

It is a desperate time for Argentina as they seek their first win in Copa America 2011 and qualify for the next stage of the tournament.

And it took all of the 45 first half minutes for the home side to score against Costa Rica, Sergio Aguero slotting it home.

Argentina took a 1-0 lead into the break.

Then a few minutes into the second half Lionel Messi played a great ball to Aguero who finished well for his second.

And then just before halfway through the second half Angel Di Maria slammed one home to make it 3-0.
Well, what was looking like a possible national disaster for Argentina never actually came to pass. With two draws in two games, it was entirely possible that they'd be forced to bow out of the Copa America (as hosts!) in the group stages if they failed to win against an under-23 Costa Rica side. All eyes were on Lionel

Messi, who'd been scapegoated for the team's disappointing performance in their

Bill Maher Equates Republican Thinking To Casey Anthony Verdict

Tonight Bill Maher sits down with Piers Morgan to talk the latest news, President Barack Obama and more. The list of GOP hopefuls is growing and it could soon include both Michele Bachmann and Sarah Palin. Which female does Maher think could lead the GOP? Maybe Bachmann. "At least she's somebody who can read." He says he really doesn't know who he would pick but he "absolutely" believes Sarah Palin could become president. "This Republican party is not your father's Republican party."
In what is probably the most ingenuous political metaphor ever said on national television, “Real Time” host Bill Maher equated Republican thinking to the Casey Anthony verdict.

“Yes, Republican base, you are just like that jury. It is pathetically clear who is killing the middle class, but you keep letting them get away with murder,” Maher lashed out.

“If you’re a working-class American who still votes Republican then you don’t get to bitch about that verdict.”

Herald Sun -AFP -XinhuaAn explosion on the coast of Cyprus that may have killed at least eight people was caused by a fire at a power station that spread to a munitions dump at a naval base, state radio CyBC reported.
The blast in Zygi on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean island happened after the fire spread to two containers loaded with munitions that were seized in 2009 from a ship, CyBC said. Eight people were killed, CyBC reported, citing the Cyprus News Agency. Cyprus Fire Department authorities couldn’t immediately confirm the number of casualties.
Fifty firefighters and 10 fire trucks are battling the blaze, said a fire official, who declined to be identified by name.
The Cyprus Power Authority, the island’s state-run electricity company, asked consumers to reduce power usage and not use air conditioners after the fire damaged the distribution network, according to an e-mailed statement.
The munitions that exploded may have come from the Russian- owned, Cypriot-flagged vessel Monchegorsk that was intercepted by Cyprus in 2009. The U.S., Britain and France said at the time that the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines chartered the vessel to send weapons-related material, including what they described as “bullet shells” and anti-tank munitions, to Syria. Iran said the seizure of the arms shipment was illegal.

US Women's Soccer Wins Against Brazil in World Cup Quarterflnal Match

Despite a wildly controversial referee call against the US Women's Soccer team, the US came back in the 11th hour to tie the game 2-2 against Brazil and then won 5-3 in penalty kicks.

The US, which would have been bounced from the World Cup if they fell to Brazil today, now advances because they won on the penalty kicks in the game in Dresden, Germany.

The team advances into the semi-finals against France.

This afternoon's game will be re-broadcast at midnight on ESPN.

Abby Wambach, who had tremendous pressure on her to score, did just that with only minutes left in the heart-stopping game that swung between the US and Brazil.

Jeter's 3,003rd hit is a game-winner

Derek Jeter hit a home run in the third inning Saturday to become the 28th player in major league history to reach the 3,000 hit plateau. When Derek Jeter collected his first big-league hit, strikeouts were a sin and walks were poor substitutes for hits. Hitters learned to swing early in the count, to put the ball in play no matter what, because something good might happen.eter became the first player to reach the milestone while wearing Yankees pinstripes and the second player to homer for his 3,000th hit, joining former teammate Wade Boggs, who accomplished the feat in 1999 with Tampa Bay.

"I wasn't sure it was going to be a home run," Jeter said. "I was hoping, but afterwards, to be honest with you, I was pretty relieved." But in the span of

Jeter’s 17-year career, the sabermetric ideas touted by “Moneyball” have swayed front offices throughout the game. Strikeout rates have soared while walks have taken on a new

significance. First-pitch swingers have been replaced by grinders, content to turn every at-bat into wars of attrition.

Rangers Fan Dies After Falling Out Of Stands During Game (Video)

ARLINGTON, Texas -- A man attending a Texas Rangers game with his young son died after falling out of the stands and about 20 feet to the ground while trying to catch a baseball tossed his way Thursday night, the Rangers and Arlington fire officials said.
Arlington Fire Department officials said in a statement that another fan nearby tried unsuccessfully to grab the man to keep him from falling. They said the victim's son did not fall.
"We had a very tragic accident tonight and one of our fans lost their life reaching over the rail trying to get a ball," team president Nolan Ryan said. "As an organization, and as our team members and our staff, we're very heavy-hearted about this, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family."
A very somber Ryan didn't get into details about the accident or release the man's name.
Ronnie Hargis was sitting in the stands at Rangers Ballpark next to the victim. The men were talking to each other before the accident.
"He went straight down. I tried to grab him but I couldn't," Hargis said. "I tried to slow him down a little bit."

TV replays showed the man falling head-first and landing behind a 14-foot-high wall supporting a video board for replays and scores. The area where the man fell is out of sight from the field.

It is the second fatal fall at a MLB ballpark this season. In May, a 27-year-old man died after he fell about 20 feet and struck his head o
n concrete during the seventh inning of a Colorado Rockies game. Witnesses told police that the man had been trying to slide down a staircase railing at Coors Field and lost his balance during a game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The accident in Texas occurred in the second inning after Oakland's Conor Jackson hit a foul ball that ricocheted into left field. Josh Hamilton, the reigning AL MVP, retrieved the ball and tossed it into the stands. Replays on Oakland's television broadcast show the man reaching for the ball and apparently catching it before tumbling.

Joe Biden Joins Twitter: Vice President's Office Will Tweet From

The famously verbose veep sent his first-ever tweet Monday, a Fourth of July message from himself and wife Jill Biden asking Americans to take time to think about U.S. troops and military families.
His office announced the development with a post on the White House blog.
Given his gift for gab – not to mention gaffes – Biden might seem an unlikely candidate to say it in 140 characters or less. Not to worry – like most politicians' tweets, Biden's will be staff-written.
It's part of the White House's growing focus on social media. The White House regularly communicates via Twitter, as does President Barack Obama's re-election campaign. Obama has told supporters he'll personally author some of the campaign tweets.
 Joe Biden Twitter
On Wednesday the White House will even hold a Twitter town hall. Obama will take questions via Twitter, though he'll respond verbally. The official White House Twitter account, (at)whitehouse, has 2.25 million followers.
Biden's Twitter username is (at)VP. His office said the account will keep followers posted on "all things happening in the Office of the Vice President," including Biden's travels and behind-the-scenes looks at his life.

'Beach' Canceled Over Gay Character: 'Billy Elliot' Writer Lee Hall Explains

Billy Elliot" playwright Lee Hall says his latest project, a community opera involving 300 children, has collapsed after backers demanded he cut words spoken by a gay character.
Hall said he refused to remove the lines "I am queer" and "I prefer a lad to a lass" from his opera "Beached" as requested by the primary school involved.
Writing in The Guardian, Hall said he had worked with the school to make other changes but that this request "seemed to come from an entirely different era."
 Lee Hall Billy Elliot
Opera North, which commissioned the piece, confirmed Monday that its July 15 premiere in Bridlington, northeast England, had been scrapped.

Nasser Al-Shami, Ex-Olympic Boxer, Wounded In Syria Shooting

A Syrian boxer who won a medal at the 2004 Olympics was injured along with at least 20 others Monday as President Bashar Assad's regime swept through several cities and towns to crush a pro-democracy uprising, activists said.
Syrian troops and tanks sealed off Hama and blocked the roads leading in, an apparent attempt to crush growing dissent there and retake the city one month after security forces withdrew. About 300,000 protesters held huge protests against the regime in Hama last week, a sign the city was spiraling out of government control.
"There is some kind of a siege on the city. They are closing all roads leading to Hama," said Syria-based rights activist Mustafa Osso.
 Nasser Alshami

Hama, which has a history of militancy against the Assad regime, was targeted in a major government crackdown nearly three decades ago. In 1982, Assad's late father and predecessor, Hafez Assad, ordered his troops to crush a rebellion by Sunni fundamentalists, killing between 10,000 and 25,000 people, rights groups say.
Also Monday, activists said Syrian security forces opened fire on people fleeing to neighboring Turkey, wounding a mother and her young son.

On Second Thought, Don't Get Married

hocking new statistics released recently by the U.S. Census Bureau suggest that Americans may no longer need marriage. For the first time ever, fewer than half of the households in the United States are married couples. In the past decade, the number of unmarried couples increased 25 percent as more people chose to cohabitate. A Pew Research Center study last year put it more succinctly, finding an increasing number of Americans now believes marriage is "becoming obsolete."
Interestingly, around the same time the Pew study came out, the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia, in their annual report on the health of marriage and family life, affirmed that more than three-quarters of Americans still believe marriage is "important" and that more than 70 percent of adults under age 30 desire to marry someday.
So it's clear that a majority of us still crave to be married. It's like we are hard wired to search after that person with whom we can spend the rest of our lives -- even in the face of these dire marital statistics.  But

the skill of choosing a marriage partner has often been treated as relatively unimportant in our society and a whole lot less complex than it actually is. And herein lies the secret of why marriage has often turned out so disappointingly for so many.

Environment Could Play Key Role In Autism Development: Studies

The debate about what causes autism continues, with two new studies suggesting there might be more of an environmental component at play than previously thought.
The first, published online Monday in the suggests that at least half of what the authors call "liability to autism" might be explained by environmental factors.
Researchers considered more than 50 sets of identical twins and 130 sets of fraternal twins, in which at least one child had a diagnosis of strict autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Relying on both parental reports and direct observation, they then used existing twin models, which rely on the degrees of shared genetics among fraternal and identical twins to determine how much certain factors are associated with autism risk. They found that only 40 percent of the risk of autism development was owed to genetic heritability, while 55 percent was linked to environmental factors. "These two studies are interesting because they're kind of a paradigm shifter in finding there is a much lower genetic contribution [to autism and ASD development]," said
 Autism Causes
Lisa Croen, PhD, director of the Kaiser Permanente Autism Research Program and the second study's lead author. "There is a much larger environmental component at play here than has been understood up to this point," she added. Croen was also an author on the twin pairs study.

Osama Bin Laden's Hunter: CIA Analyst Examined

After Navy SEALs killed Osama bin Laden, the White House released a photo of President Barack Obama and his Cabinet inside the Situation Room, watching the daring raid unfold.
The analyst was the first to put in writing last summer that the CIA might have a legitimate lead on finding bin Laden. He oversaw the collection of clues that led the agency to a fortified compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. His was among the most confident voices telling Obama that bin Laden was probably behind those walls.
The CIA will not permit him to speak with reporters. But interviews with former and current U.S. intelligence officials reveal a story of quiet persistence and continuity that led to the greatest counterterrorism success in the history of the CIA. Nearly all the officials insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters or because they did not want their names linked to the bin Laden operation. He had been a standout in the agency's Russian and Balkan departments. When Vladimir Putin was coming to power in
 Osama Bin Laden Cia
Russia, for instance, John pulled together details overlooked by others and wrote what some colleagues considered the definitive profile of Putin. He challenged some of the agency's conventional wisdom about Putin's KGB background and painted a much fuller portrait of the man who would come to dominate Russian politics.

Meaghan Blanchard Royal Gaffe: 'I Mixed Up Duke And Duchess'

he 22-year-old country singer had stayed up most of the night rehearsing her remarks to Prince William and Kate as they took in a series of cultural performances on Prince Edward Island on Monday.
When she took the podium at the Dalvay by the Sea resort and tried to address the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge by their formal titles, however, things didn't go as planned.
“I mixed up Duke and Duchess and it came out d o o t c h, Dootch,” Blanchard said in an interview from Charlottetown.
The mispronunciation — which veered dangerously close to a derogatory insult — sparked widespread laughter from the audience and prompted some “life-saving” guffaws from the royal couple themselves.
Blanchard said the slip prompted Kate to hurry over to her husband to give him a playful tap on the shoulder, laughing all the while.
The hilarity helped ease the tension of an embarrassing moment, she said.
Story continues below
“I felt awful because that's not how I envisioned it going, but sometimes that's just life and you gotta roll with the punches,” she said.
The songstress bounced back from the slipup to deliver a flawless performance of the self-penned “Waltzing with you.”
Blanchard wrote the song in tribute to her grandparents and felt the romantic ballad would make an appropriate choice to perform before the newlyweds.
Talk of her flub dominated discussion when the performers cleared the stage, but Blanchard said she felt bolstered by the supportive members of the Island arts scene.

Are You Pretending to Be Independent?

In my experience coaching and consulting with thousands of people, I have found that most people are seeking freedom and settling for the myth of independence. If we could solve this riddle, I think we would go a long way toward solving much of what pains us in today's world of volatile economics and vitriolic politics.
Merriam-Webster tells us that being independent means a few very different things. The first definition, "not subject to control by others" or "not affiliated with a larger controlling unit" is workable for the most part and reflects the meaning and significance of Independence Day.
However, the next several definitions point out some deeper challenges; for example, "not requiring or relying on something else ... (or) someone else" is pretty much a non-starter for darn near every one of us. It's not until the

fourth definition that we find the real source of the problem I want to address today: "showing a desire for freedom."

Greatest American Actresses (PHOTOS)

Like most other fields, professions, hobbies and, well, really, anything else, to truly succeed, on a lasting level, as a woman in show business has required a double standard-satisfying portfolio of talent,
First cast as ladies in distres and objects of desire and prize, it took certain landmark talents to prove that women can not only appear on camera, they can own it in ways all their own. In Hollywood today, while certain segregations and institutional biases still exist (to which the gender of screenwriters, directors and producers can in many ways be linked), the woman star takes the lead now more than ever before.
In recognition of that growth, and in honor of the American creative and business dominance of show business, this July 4th, we take a look at some of the greatest American-born women actors, putting to a vote just which

one is the greatest. Of course, all have their arguments, and it may-well be impossible to decide, but it's at least worth looking back at their careers.

Miss Brazil, Debora Lyra, Robbed At Gunpoint In Front Of Home

Miss Brazil has been robbed at gunpoint in front of her home.
The Miss Brazil pageant press office says that Debora Lyra was held up at gunpoint as she approached the entrance of her gated condo in Sao Paulo on Sunday.
Monday's statement says a well-dressed man with a pistol approached Lyra as she pulled up to her condominium. He took her purse, which contained her documents, cell phones and credit cards. He also took the car, which she had been given for winning the 2010 pageant.

 Miss Brazil
She then tweeted in frustration: "For how long will these criminals keep doing this? I was just robbed at the entrance to my house."

Takeru Kobayashi Sets World Record With 69 Hot Dogs, Joey Chestnut Wins 2011

akeru Kobayashi has regained the title of the world's greatest hot dog eater -- but this time it comes with an asterisk.
Joey Chestnut once again won the Mustard Belt at the Nathan's Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest in Brooklyn, N.Y., but eating in exile on a rooftop in Manhattan, Kobayashi managed to put away a world record of 69 hot dogs in 10 minutes to Chesnut's 62.
After Kobayashi's camp and the organizers of the July 4 hot dog eating contest failed to reconcile their

differences following a contract dispute and the eater's arrest at last year's contest, the six-time Nathan's champ took to the bar 230 FIFTH for an unsanctioned eating expo overseen by New York State Athletic Association judges Brian Adams and Tyrone Jackson.

Tristane Banon To File Sexual Assault Lawsuit Against Dominique Strauss-Kahn

Dominique Strauss-Kahn faced a potential new sexual assault investigation Monday after a young French writer said she would formally accuse him of trying to rape her during a 2002 book interview – a dizzying turn of events just as the former IMF chief's fortunes seemed to be growing brighter.
The sordid exchange may have deep ramifications for the 2012 presidential race in France, where the surprise weakening of the sexual assault case against Strauss-Kahn in New York last week sparked a fierce debate about whether he should return to politics if the American case against him collapses completely.
Before Banon's announcement, polls showed voters were evenly split about whether Strauss-Kahn, 62, should try to revive a career that until recently had him on track to take on conservative President Nicolas Sarkozy in the race to be France's next leader.
"DSK Back?" the left-leaning daily Liberation asked on its front page Monday. Others have expressed disgust with allegations that the Socialist politician routinely subjected women to crude sexual advances, and lived a luxurious lifestyle out of touch with ordinary French people, even in the glare of press attention in New York.

July 4th: Obama Thanks Troops At White House Party

Telling U.S. troops that "America is proud of all of you," President Barack Obama marked the Fourth of July holiday by hosting a barbecue and concert for military members and families on the South Lawn of the White House.
The president and his family – wife Michelle and daughters Sasha and Malia – greeted more than 1,200 guests from a White House balcony Monday evening. After brief remarks, the first couple stood in the driveway and shook hands with visitors.
"You represent the latest in a long line of heroes who have served our country with honor, who have made incredible sacrifices to protect the freedoms that we all enjoy," Obama said.
"You've done everything we could've asked of you," he said, also recognizing the "families that serve alongside of you with strength and devotion."
This is the third year the first family has celebrated July Fourth with service members and their families. Obama told his guests Monday that the occasion was "a chance to get out of the uniform, relax a little bit and have some fun."

BART Shooting: San Francisco Bay Area Transit Officers Kill Man

BART spokesman Linton Johnson said dispatchers received a call of a "wobbly drunk" on the platform of the Civic Center/UN Plaza station at around 9:30 p.m. Sunday. Two transit officers arrived and then reported shooting a man, who died about an hour later.
Investigators were trying to determine whether the man killed was the same person originally reported to be drunk. Investigators reported finding broken glass and knives at the scene
One BART officer suffered cuts and bruises on his arm. Both officers have been placed on administrative leave, as is standard policy.
Neither the shooting victim nor the officers involved have been identified, though BART officials said the dead man was white, as was one of the officers. The other officer was described by the agency as Asian.
BART is battling an image problem after a white officer shot and killed an unarmed black passenger on New Year's Day 2009 at a station in Oakland, a killing that sparked widespread debate and prompted racial unrest in that city.

Caylee Anthony Crime Scene Draws Droves Of Onlookers

The crowds drifted from Hope Spring Dr., where the Anthony family home sits, down to the place on Suburban Dr. where 2-year-old Caylee Anthony's skeletal remains were found in December 2008. The pile of stuffed animals marking the spot grew as onlookers passed by.
It was an impromptu gathering of people who came to bid Caylee a final farewell, as a jury debates whether her mother is guilty or innocent.
"We live in the area. It's in our backyard. It's sad. A little girl was murdered. We're here to go down to the gravesite to pay our respects," LuAnn Sepe of Orlando told The Huffington Post as she and her friend, Melanie Raddano, slowly made their way down Suburban Drive  ust behind Sepe and Raddano was Luana Haijoob. She said she drove about 40 miles from her home near Daytona to pay her respects.Caylee Anthony

China Coal Consumption Linked To Global Cooling

The answer seems counterintuitive. It's all that sulfur pollution in the air from China's massive coal-burning, according to a new study.
Sulfur particles in the air deflect the sun's rays and can temporarily cool things down a bit. That can happen even as coal-burning produces the carbon dioxide that contributes to global warming.
"People normally just focus on the warming effect of CO2 (carbon dioxide), but during the Chinese economic expansion there was a huge increase in sulfur emissions," which have a cooling effect, explained Robert K. Kaufmann of Boston University. He's the lead author of the study published Monday in Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.
But sulfur's cooling effect is only temporary, while the carbon dioxide from coal burning stays in Earth's atmosphere a long time.
Chinese coal consumption doubled between 2003 and 2007, and that caused a 26 percent increase in global coal consumption, Kaufmann said.
Now, Chinese leaders have recognized the effects of that pollution on their environment and their citizens'

health and are installing equipment to scrub out the sulfur particles, Kaufmann said.
Sulfur quickly drops out of the air if it is not replenished, while carbon dioxide remains for a long time, so its warming effects are beginning to be visible again, he noted. The plateau in temperature growth disappeared in 2009 and 2010, when temperatures lurched upward.

Twitter Hacking Prompts Secret Service To Investigate Incident

The Secret Service said Monday it will investigate the hacking of Fox's political Twitter account over updates claiming that President Barack Obama had been assassinated.
Secret Service spokesman George Ogilvie says the law enforcement agency whose job it is to protect the president will conduct a probe of the false postings and that "we will conduct the appropriate follow up."
Hackers broke into the FoxNewsPolitics account early Monday, leaving a series of six tweets reporting that Obama had been shot to death in Iowa and the shooter was unknown.
In a statement posted on its website, Fox News called the tweets "malicious" and "false."
"We will be requesting a detailed investigation from Twitter about how this occurred, and measures to prevent

Mexico Boat Capsizes, U.S. Tourists Feared Dead

Eight American vacationers are presumed to have drowned after a sports fishing charter capsized in a storm and sank off Mexico's Baja California peninsula, authorities said on Monday.
The 115-foot (35-meter) boat Erik left San Felipe on the Sea of Cortez, a haven for windsurfers and sports fishermen, on Saturday for a six-day fishing trip with 43 people on board, including 27 American tourists.
But on its first night out of port, the Erik was struck by an electrical storm and capsized early on Sunday, port and navy officials said.
After searching for almost 24 hours, local rescue officials had found one body and said they had given up hope of finding seven missing people alive. Divers had been brought in to aid in the search.

"We have changed the operation, now we're focusing on recovering ... people, but not alive," said Alfredo Escobedo, the director of emergency services in Baja California state.

Fourth Of July: Independence Day Celebrated With Fireworks

The nation's most extravagant display of July 4 fireworks Monday was a triumphant celebration that turned solemn briefly to commemorate the 10-year mark since the Sept. 11 attacks

Tens of thousands of people from all over the world streamed to Manhattan's West Side to see the pyrotechnics show over the Hudson River between New York and New Jersey, featuring more than 40,000 shells exploding in choreographed, multicolored progression.

"It's beautiful," said Rosa Riveras, a 57-year-old health educator from northern Manhattan, as bursts of light filled the sky. "It's amazing. I'm loving it."

NBC ran an exclusive broadcast from a pier along the river, with Nick Lachey of the show "The Sing-Off" hosting. Viewers got pre-recorded performances by Beyonce, filmed in front of the Statue of Liberty, and country music star Brad Paisley. Then the fireworks lit up the sky, tightly choreographed to a half-hour soundtrack from Katy Perry, LeAnne Rimes, Jennifer Hudson and other artists.
